On Yer Bike

On Yer Bike

… if you want to be on time and in good health

Price Partnership take to the road

Even before Boris put London on bicycles, Simon Price was pedalling his way around London. Note the spelling: as a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, he is anything but a “peddler”! Transport for London says the average speed of traffic in central London is just under 9 mph between 7 am and 7pm. “I can double that speed without breaking sweat – and it keeps me fit” adds Simon. He started with one bike and now has three, his enthusiasm firing his insatiable desire for a technologically better, lighter, faster bicycle.

Simon heads a well-established firm of Chartered Surveyors, Price Partnership, practicing from Fulham and concentrating on the moneyed quadrant of London’s south west: Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham and Westminster north of the river; Battersea, Wandsworth, Putney & Wimbledon to the south of it. He also works in and around Guildford but avoids the cobbled High Street for obvious reasons.

Says Simon: “As a Chartered Surveyor I have a professional obligation to be on time for an appointment and spend as long as is necessary there to do the job. By car, I had to set off early, then feed the meter or pick up fines because I had not finished what I was doing. Sometimes I still take public transport but trains and buses run for their own convenience, not mine”. He recalls Lord Curzon’s famous complaint that the public transport was disappointing as it did not take him to his door. “On a bike, I can save time, frustration, money and have the time to do my job properly.”

His assistants have followed his example. They bought their bikes through the “cycle to Work Scheme” which allows repayment through an adjustment of their National Insurance payments.

No wonder the cycling population has almost doubled to 760,000 since 2000.

Summer is upon us

Summer is upon us

With the onset of the warm weather we have seen the seasonal decline in activity in the property market. This is a welcome development, work levels have been manic and now we can conclude some of those “long running” party wall matters, implement the planned changes in our office structure and enjoy our individual holidays in July and August.

September usually sees a seasonal upturn. As people return from vacation and sort out their offsprings’ school and university arrangements, they tend to put into action the plans they dreamt up on the sun-lounger. Houses go on the market and new properties are viewed or the prospect of paying stamp duty results in the architect visiting to plan the extension.

We can help with the detailed building survey of your new house or the party wall matters arising from your planned extension. Contact us to talk these through so as to be prepared and avoid surprises. A little bit of planning goes a long way.
